Custom Segment LCD Tooling: What It Costs and How Long It Takes
Why tooling exists at all
A segment display is not assembled from standard parts. The glass pattern, the polarizer, the printing and the connector are all specific to your layout, so tooling has to be produced before the first sample can be built. It is charged once and belongs to the project.
What drives the tooling cost
- Outline size and segment count: more detail and tighter tolerances mean more work in the pattern.
- Connector type: FPC and pin assemblies add tooling compared with a plain zebra design.
- Backlight: a light guide and its housing are separate tooling items.
- Decorative printing: colour layers and windows add screens.
Typical timeline
- Drawing review and quotation — 1 business day
- Tooling and first samples — 7–10 working days for panels, 10–15 for modules and backlights
- Your validation — allow the time your own qualification needs
- Production — confirmed against quantity and material availability when the order is placed
Reducing risk on a first project
Freeze the layout before tooling. Changes after tooling are possible but cost time, and they are the most common reason a first project slips. If you are unsure about viewing direction, temperature range or the connector, raise it during drawing review — those decisions are cheap at that stage and expensive later.
