How MOQ and Tooling Shape the Price of a Custom Display

Two costs, two behaviours

A custom display carries a one-off tooling cost and a unit price. Tooling does not fall with volume; the unit price does. Any comparison that looks only at the unit price is incomplete.

Why MOQ exists

Below a certain quantity, the setup — glass, polarizer, printing screens, connector assembly — costs more than the parts produced. The minimum order is where a run stops losing money. It is a mechanical fact, not a negotiation tactic, and it changes with the complexity of the display.

How to compare quotations fairly

  1. Total cost of the first year, not the unit price: tooling + (units × price) + freight.
  2. Price at two quantity breaks. A quotation at a single quantity hides where the price actually breaks.
  3. Cost of a design change. Ask what a layout change costs after tooling — that number tells you how much to invest in the drawing now.

Reducing the first order without cutting corners

  • Freeze the layout before tooling: layout changes are the most common hidden cost
  • Use standard glass thickness and outline where the housing allows it
  • Start with a validation batch, then place the volume order against the frozen design
  • Ask whether existing tooling covers your size — sometimes a small layout compromise avoids tooling entirely

Send the drawing and the annual quantity, and ask for the quotation in this shape: tooling, unit price at two quantities, sample lead time and the cost of a layout change. It makes suppliers comparable.

Request a quotation

Send your drawing, target quantity and operating conditions. Our engineers reply with a feasibility check, tooling cost and lead time within one business day.

  • Drawing review within 24 hours
  • Samples in 7–10 working days
  • NDA available on request

Optional. PDF, image, CAD (DWG / DXF / STEP / IGES), spreadsheet or ZIP — up to 8 MB. Drawings are treated as confidential and never published; we can sign an NDA before you send them.
